Student caseworkers are upper-year law students who have been admitted to the startup law clinical course offered in the fall semester. In the course of their work, students will interview startup founders and respond to their requests for legal information, present to the public on legal issues faced by startups, and contribute to the Clinic’s blog.

The Clinic offers student caseworkers the opportunity to:

• acquire substantive knowledge in various aspects of startup law;
• gain an understanding of their professional responsibilities as students and eventually as lawyers; and
• improve their presentation skills by carrying out a group public education session on a chosen topic related to the Clinic’s work.

The selection process for fall 2026 caseworkers is now open:

uOttawa common law students who have completed their first year of law school are eligible to apply. Eligible students are invited to submit a CV (two pages maximum), a record of law school grades, and a one-page cover letter explaining why they want to enroll in the Clinic to dsarro@uottawa.ca by July 24, 2026.

Applications will be evaluated and accepted on a rolling basis, with places confirmed as early as June 2026. Students should enroll in a full complement of courses, dropping their registration in one course if accepted into the Clinic. For information on the clinical course, see the Course Search Engine.

Students will be selected based on academic performance in law school, completion of relevant coursework (particularly Law for Start-ups and Droit des sociétés/Business Organizations), and demonstrated interest in the work to be undertaken by the Clinic (e.g., through relevant work experience or extra-curriculars). Please note that the clinical course is only offered in English.
